While visual inspections can overlook microscopic contamination, ATP testing detects organic residue that signals inadequate cleaning—providing travelers with confidence that a room is genuinely clean, not just tidy in appearance. ATP testing is a well‑established sanitation verification method, widely used in healthcare and the food safety industry, and recognized by the CDC as an effective tool for assessing cleanliness. Although ATP tests do not detect viruses directly, low ATP levels indicate that a surface is free of the organic matter where germs are more likely to survive. AAA incorporated ATP testing into the Inspected Clean program to ensure that cleanliness is verified through objective measurement, not simply claimed by the property.
