AAA discontinued the One Diamond and Two Diamond labels in 2020, merging both categories into the single AAA Approved designation. This change simplified the rating structure and better reflected how travelers evaluate lodging options. The distinctions between One and Two Diamond properties were often minimal and did little to help travelers meaningfully differentiate among lower‑tier accommodations. The Approved designation now serves as a clear baseline indicator that a property meets AAA’s essential standards for cleanliness, comfort, and safety—without the enhanced amenities and service levels found at the Three Diamond tier and above.
