AAA introduced the Inspected Clean program in 2020–2021 in response to heightened traveler concerns about hotel sanitation during the COVID‑19 pandemic. While ATP testing does not detect viruses directly, low ATP readings indicate that surfaces are free of the organic residue where germs can survive. AAA adopted this scientific method to provide travelers with objective cleanliness verification that goes beyond visual inspection. The program has since become a permanent part of AAA’s hotel evaluation process, and all Diamond‑designated hotels now undergo ATP surface testing during their inspections.
