Bob, my dear friend and brother in Christ. I can't imagine not being able to call you or have you call us and have those strange, long, wonderful conversations about everything theological and otherwise. I named you "Monomaniac" because of your way of going relentlessly after a topic, talking about it faster and more deeply than anyone I know (except Gretchen, on the "more deeply" part), and then "treeing" me verbally, like a hound dog who would not let his victim come down out of the tree, even when she had conceded the point!
Bob and Gretchen, I still have the little notebooks with the notes I took in the mid to late 70's from your weekly Bible studies at Jo's house. I still remember living with you in your book-intensive home while I was in college. I remember when you brought Mary home -- your first baby. I remember the years we lived far apart, and I was so excited to get to visit with you and talk far into the night like old times.
I referred to your care my family and close friends when they had questions, and because of your deep compassion, brilliance and integrity, they became your good friends.
I love you both. You are family to me. Gretchen, Mary, Karen and Paul, you are in our hearts and our prayers. God's tender mercy and comfort be yours.
Carole & Mark Ryan, Timothy and Petrea
I'm glad for you that you're with Jesus, but I will really miss you.
