There is no one whose work I respect more than Gretchen and Bob's, and frankly I am unable to separate the contributions of the two in my mind.
The soundness of their reasoning, the clarity of expression, the fearless way they walk the mine field between legalism and tolerance are winsome and right on. They are my intellectual heroes.
I remember how intrigued I was when I first met Bob at First Pres in San Diego. He had an elite Oxford mind in a blue collar body. His heart was soft as a lamb's, but his skin was tough as steel wool. No matter the topic, over time I have never heard him be offended by the question. Truth and love lived in Bob comfortably. How refreshing was his laughter.
Life is surely problematic and disconcerting, isn't it? The issues in our world are often complex and perplexing for the seeker of truth. The Christian community will miss the wise counsel of Bob Passatino, but I know that Gretchen will miss it even more. With warmth and humor he was able to penetrate the cracks in thinking that deny believers the joy and peace that God promises...and he was so available!!
As for the future, we rejoice that Gretchen will continue the sacred responsibility that they have been given to direct our thinking on issues that are too often ignored, and on those that divide or bewilder us. For many of us you wear the mantle of CS Lewis on your shoulders. We love you, Gretchen. You are in His Grip.
We pray fervently that you may Live in Joshua 1:5-9. You go girl!!
