I was nearly 30 years ago that my husband, Jim, and I met Bob and Gretchen. These 30 years would have been very different had we never made the encounter. Very lacking.
We shared much. We had children at the same time, our first just 5 weeks apart, and our second due within the same time frame. We swapped parenting strategies as the little ones increased in stature. We attended many, many Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, birthday, and graduation parties at their home or in their honor, and the wedding of that first-born daughter! And how I'll always treasure that wonderful evening, sharing dinner with them in Mary's new apartment.
Bob admired his family. He said on numerous occasion that Gretchen was one of the smartest people he knew. And he's been bragging on his kids since before they could even say, "Daddy!" And, once again, he was right: they are indeed praiseworthy.
We learned much from them. I used to tease Bob by asking him what new "heresy" he had to tell me. He always had something to say that I'd never heard before, and it was always good. I gave up trying to argue with him. Not only was he a better detaber than I, he was right! (I could always tell when my husband was talking to him on the phone, even though I could only hear one side of the conversation. Jim always talked faster, just to keep up!)
We will miss Bob. We will miss his smile, his wit, his mind, and his care for us. We will miss the little "inside jokes" we shared. He added much to our lives, and I bless the Lord for using Bob to equip the saints for their work of service.
