It is very difficult to express how deeply affected I am at Bob's passing into glory. I know without any doubt that Bob is with the Lord Jesus, whom he loved, studied, and sought to know more deeply. Yet my eyes are filled with tears as I type these words, and my mind is stung with sorrow. It's not simply that "the Christian world" has lost a great defender and thoughtful teacher -- I have lost a friend, a role model, and a truly kindred spirit, which is so very rare sometimes.
I admired Bob before I even met him, from the first earnest descriptions of appreciation and respect I heard from Gary Metz. When I met him, I was struck by a man who could both listen and understand, who knew the value of rational thought, and yet who knew from personal encounter with Christ that true faith is not limited to lemmas, propositions, and intellectual argumentation. Bob loved God with both his mind and his heart, and he (and Gretchen!) showed the warmth of hospitality and patience to me on numerous occasions.
Though Heaven is welcoming home a citizen who has had a history of faithful service, my heart still sinks with the loss I feel here on earth. May God continue to bless Gretchen, Mary, Karen, and Paul during these special days. You all have a special place in my heart.
